Semantic Versioning 2.0

This item was not updated in last three versions of the Radar. Should it have appeared in one of the more recent editions, there is a good chance it remains pertinent. However, if the item dates back further, its relevance may have diminished and our current evaluation could vary. Regrettably, our capacity to consistently revisit items from past Radar editions is limited.

Semantic Versioning 2.0 is a scheme for specifying a software's version. As the de facto standard, this is widely used and established in all areas of software development. It offers a clear way of communicating changes over the lifetime of the software being developed.

Especially in large-scale projects with many components being dependent on each other, it is important to use unambiguous communication across teams.
